First, the news: after two years of renovation exile in Shippenville, the Clarion County Register & Recorder is back at the courthouse — Suite 24, first floor, 421 Main Street, Clarion, as of July 2026. Any letter, website, or GPS entry pointing to 160 Amsler Avenue is outdated. The office is reachable at (814) 226-4000 ext. 2500, records are open 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays — with a 4:00 p.m. cutoff for filings — and since June 2025 the counter takes cash or check only, no cards.
One Office, Three Jobs
Clarion County combines Register of Wills, Recorder of Deeds, and Clerk of Orphans' Court in one office that also handles marriage licenses and archives the county's inheritance-tax filings. For the farms, Cook Forest camps, and oil-and-gas interests that run through Clarion County estates, the estate opens and the eventual deeds record at the same Suite 24 counter. There you (or your attorney) will:
- File the original will and petition for probate
- Qualify as executor or administrator — producing your Letters and short certificates
- File the inventory, inheritance-tax return, and estate filings as administration proceeds
- Research estate records — the office's files reach back to 1840
Location, Hours & Contact
Suite 24, first floor, Clarion County Courthouse, 421 Main Street, Clarion, PA 16214 — (814) 226-4000, ext. 2500 (ext. 2501 for appointments). Public inspection hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with filings in by 4:00 p.m. As of this writing the office is led by Register & Recorder Rebekah Weckerly. Parking is in the lot next to the courthouse just off Main Street (occupied by the farmers market on summer Saturdays, when the office is closed anyway), and the building runs a single-entry security checkpoint staffed by the Sheriff's Office.
Opening an Estate: What to Bring
- The original will (originals, not photocopies)
- An original death certificate
- A completed petition for probate and supporting forms
- Photo ID for each personal representative
- Cash or a check — the office stopped accepting cards in June 2025; confirm current fee figures at ext. 2500 before the drive, and order short certificates at the same visit
No video or remote qualification procedure is published, and the office's appointment practice for marriage licenses suggests calling ahead for probate too. Many of the office's records are accessible 24 hours a day through the Infocon County Access subscription system linked from the county's site, with the office holding estate records from 1840 forward — online coverage dates aren't published, so confirm before subscribing for a one-time search, or let us run it as part of the engagement. All records except military and adoption files are open to the public. And the standing planning note: a probated will eventually becomes a public record — families who want the outcome private pair their planning with a properly funded trust.
