The Jefferson County Register of Wills: A Practical Guide

Second floor of the Brookville courthouse — the estate information sheet, the fee true-up, and what to bring.

Every Jefferson County estate starts at the Register of Wills — second floor of the Jefferson County Courthouse, 200 Main Street, Brookville, (814) 849-1610, weekdays 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Two local practices to know: the county requires an estate information sheet when opening an estate, and the graduated probate fee gets trued up later — underestimate the gross value on the petition and you'll be invoiced the difference, with nothing accepted for final settlement until it's paid. Estimate carefully at the start; we do.

One Office, Three Jobs

Jefferson County combines Register of Wills, Recorder of Deeds, and Clerk of Orphans' Court in one elected office on the courthouse's second floor. For the camps, timberland, and Brookville and Punxsutawney homes that make up the county's estates, that means the estate opens, the inheritance-tax return files, and the eventual deeds record through one counter. There you (or your attorney) will:

  • File the original will and petition for probate, with the required estate information sheet
  • Qualify as executor or administrator — producing your Letters and short certificates
  • File the inventory, inheritance-tax return, and estate filings as administration proceeds
  • Record estate deeds when property transfers or sells

Location, Hours & Contact

Second floor, Jefferson County Courthouse, 200 Main Street, Brookville, PA 15825(814) 849-1610. Hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. As of this writing the office is led by Register of Wills, Recorder of Deeds & Clerk of Orphans' Court Brianna Bullers. Security is a single public entrance staffed by an armed deputy, with magnetometer screening and X-rayed packages — travel light. The office takes cash, checks, and credit cards (cards carry a service fee).

Opening an Estate: The Fee True-Up

Jefferson County's probate fee is graduated by the estate's gross value as stated on the Petition for Letters — and the county checks the math later. If the estate turns out larger than estimated, the fee is adjusted and invoiced, payable within 30 days, and the office will not accept the estate settlement for filing until every fee is paid. That makes the opening-day value estimate a real decision, not a formality: too low and you're chasing invoices at closing time; too high and you've overpaid. When we open a Jefferson County estate, we value the gross estate carefully before filing — the same numbers drive the inheritance-tax return anyway.

For the visit, bring the original will, an original death certificate, the completed petition and estate information sheet, photo ID, and payment. No video or remote qualification procedure is published; since the same office requires appointments for marriage licenses, we call ahead to confirm probate scheduling and make it one trip up Route 28 — everything after it handled by phone, video, and mail.

Searching Estate Records

Jefferson County publishes no online estate-records search — estate research goes through the office, and mailed copy requests need a stamped self-addressed envelope (or an extra $2.00 for postage). We fold records requests into the engagement for title and heir work. And the standing planning note: a probated will eventually becomes a public record — families who want the outcome private pair their planning with a properly funded trust.

What the Office Can't Do

The Register's staff are helpful, but they are court officials — they cannot tell you whether probate is required, how to value the gross estate, or what your executor duties are. Those are the questions we answer every day.
